Some aspects regarding the static behavior of basalt in the machine building industry
2017
Basalt is a material available in big quantities in nature. It has a low price and can be used in various domains. It can be relatively easily extracted from natural deposits and processed by means of melting. Melted and recrystallized basalt has demonstrated promising behavior with regards of its use in manufacturing, as reported in the literature. This work aims to present some aspects regarding the opportunity of using basalt in manufacturing the subassemblies of machine-tools. The research was made using grey cast iron and steel parts as reference for a comparative study. The researches presented in this work were focused on analyzing the behavior of basalt parts submitted to static str…
Investigations on friction and wear mechanisms of the PVD-TiAlN coated carbide in dry sliding against steels and cast iron
2006
Abstract The tribological behaviour of the monolayer PVD-titanium aluminium nitride (TiAlN) coated carbide inserts in unidirectional dry sliding against steel and cast iron counterparts was investigated using the pin-on-disc standard test with varying sliding speeds and normal loads. Three different materials of various machinability rates were used as the counterparts, namely the normalised medium carbon steel C45 equivalent to AISI 1045, austenitic stainless steel 1H18N9T equivalent to AISI 304 and gray cast iron EN-GJL-300 with flake-shaped graphite. A pin-on-disc device with round tool inserts was used to conduct friction and wear tests in which both the friction coefficient and the lin…
Friction and wear of lubricated M3 Class 2 sintered high speed steel with and without TiC and MnS additives
2005
Abstract M3/2 sintered high speed steel and composite materials processed by initial admixing of 5 wt.% TiC (to decrease wear) and 5 wt.% MnS (to minimise friction) powders, singly and in combination, were assessed in pin-on-disc tribometers specially constructed to simulate use in the automotive valve train. Pins were of the sintered materials and the mating tribological material discs of T1 high speed steel. For comparison with existing conventional materials, identical tests were performed with discs and pins of two types of spheroidal cast iron. Testing at ∼110 °C, employing a few drops of fresh Shell Helix Standard SAE: 15W-40, API: SJ/CF oil, in daily segments of 5000 m of sliding dis…
Criteria of multiaxial random fatigue based on stress, strain and energy parameters of damage in the critical plane
2005
In this paper generalized criteria of multiaxial random fatigue based on stress, strain and strain energy density parameters in the critical plane have been discussed. The proposed criteria reduce multiaxial state of stress to the equivalent uniaxial tension–compression or alternating bending. Relations between the coefficients occurring in the considered criteria have been derived. Thus, it is possible to take into account fatigue properties of materials under simple loading states during determination of the multiaxial fatigue life. Presented models have successfully correlated fatigue lives of cast iron GGG40 and steel 18G2A specimens under constant amplitude in-phase and out-of-phase lo…
Solai ad orditura metallica. Per una storia della costruzione
2016
Nodular cast iron fatigue lifetime in cyclic plane bending
2012
The fatigue behavior of a component is strongly dependent on the material and its surface condition. Therefore, the manner in which the surface is prepared during component manufacturing (surface roughness, residual stresses etc.) has a decisive role in dictating the initiation time for fatigue cracks. The fatigue behavior of the same material, a nodular cast iron, with three different surface conditions (fine ground, sand blast and as-cast) has been investigated under cyclic plane bending. The results show differences in fatigue strength, which are associated with the surface conditions. The characteristics of the surface layers of the different test specimens were examined by metallograph…
